Each of the doctors at McKinlay and Peters Equine Hospital plays a part in our surgical services.
We have thirty years of combined veterinary experience and a variety of diagnostic tools to assist in our pre-surgical workup. We have the ability to include endoscopy, digital radiographs and complete lab work in any work up. At this point, we offer two different types of surgery; soft tissue, and orthopedic. We always begin every surgical case with a complete diagnostic workup to determine if surgery is the best option for that patient. Our veterinarians will give you a prognosis, treatment plan, and estimated cost for the procedure.
Orthopedic surgeries (surgeries of the msculo-skeletal system) include procedures such as: transphyseal bridging and periosteal transections for angular limb deformities on foals and the removal of fractured splint bones.
Soft tissue surgeries include: ovariectomy in mares, cryptorchidectomy in stallions, hernia repair in foals, skin grafts for large wounds and soft tissue mass removal including; sarcoids, melanomas, and squamous cell carcinoma.
Emergency surgeries such as colic surgery are referred to Washington State University Teaching Hospital. The doctors at MPEH have a long standing relationship with the doctors and staff at WSU which allows for an easy transition from our care to theirs.
MPEH has several short and long term goals. Our short term goals include a complete surgery suite with a designated induction and recovery room. This will give us the ability to do surgeries that we don’t have the capabilities for in our present circumstances. Our long term goals include colic surgeries and arthroscopic/laparoscopic surgeries with a board certified surgeon as part of our team.
We are excited about the changes coming for our hospital and feel it will enhance our already exceptional service. Our mission for any surgical candidate is that we meet the specific needs of your horse: whether that is saving his life, attaining her highest athletic potential or simply to enjoy a more comfortable quality of life.
