McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital
At McKinlay & Peters Equine we take pride in our reproduction services.
Our business was built largely around reproduction and this specialty continues to be a mainstay of our practice. Our Reproduction Center in Colbert, is a beautiful facility for stallions, mares and foals. We have safe, lighted stalls for promoting early cycling in mares, video monitored foaling stalls, secure stallion stalls, and turn-out paddocks
We love mares and offer exceptional quality reproductive services for them. We utilize the most up-to-date techniques in caring for mares with fertility issues. Year after year, many mare owners return to have their mares artificially inseminated with transported fresh, cooled, or frozen semen. Our embryo transfer program is second to none in the northwest. Embryo transfers are done for a number of reasons including raising multiple foals from a superior mare in a given year and/or allowing young performance mares to continue their athletic careers. Embryos can be flushed from mares as young as two years of age and as old as they continue to ovulate – into their twenties in many cases. Quality recipient mares are available. We ship and receive cooled embryos to and from other parts of the country. Video monitored foaling stalls are available to foal out your mare.
We are a Select Breeders Services Affiliate Lab
This Affiliation holds us to the highest standards in semen preparation, handling and storage in the industry.
Each year we are privileged to stand outstanding sires from many disciplines of equine interest. Western Pleasure, Reining, Dressage, Barrel Racing, Halter, Working Cow Horse and Cutting are represented in the fine stallions that stand at MPEH Reproduction Center.
For stallions, we also offer a wide variety of reproductive services. These include fertility and breeding soundness evaluation, training to the phantom mare for semen collection, shipping cooled semen and semen freezing. We employ the most thorough and stringent test freezing process in the industry and have experienced excellent results. Stallion semen can be frozen and stored indefinitely, preserving valuable genetic material for future use. Frozen semen can be transported potentially anywhere. It may also be used to enable an athletic performance stallion to continue his show career uninterrupted. Storage is available for frozen semen.
ICSI
In 2024 we began offering Oocyte Aspiration, the first phase of the ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) process. Mares are sedated and prepped for this sterile procedure where oocytes (eggs) are recovered from the follicles on the ovaries. The oocytes are then shipped to distant labs where they are matured and injected with a single sperm. This procedure is ideal for mares being bred to stallions that are deceased or where sperm numbers are extremely limited. It is also ideal for certain mares with reproductive inefficiencies. These include failure to ovulate, uterine pathology or oviductal blockage. There is the potential to obtain multiple embryos from a single aspiration. These embryos can be transferred fresh, shipped back here and transferred, or frozen (vitrified) to be transferred into a recipient at a later date.
We also constructed a facility to handle bucking horses in 2024. We have worked on a few already, and hope to be able to continue to provide all the assisted reproductive techniques outlined above for bucking horses. We hope to become a destination for these horses near and dear to Dr. McKinlay's heart (he rode bareback horses in 5 different decades of his life!) This is a dream that has finally become a reality.
